How to Leverage Search on Xiaohongshu in 2026: A Practical Guide for Global Brands

26 min read By Elisa Harca • Updated Sep 26, 2026
TL;DR

Is Xiaohongshu really used for search?

Yes. It handled roughly 600 million searches a day by late 2024, and around 70% of users search.

What decides search visibility?

Relevance to the query, how useful the note is, and engagement such as saves and comments.

How do feeds and search work together?

Creator and feed content create demand. Search captures it when consumers research before buying.

What budget does a search test need?

A focused test of RMB 5,000 to 10,000 in search media can give useful early signals.

Marketers outside of China still routinely compare Xiaohongshu with Instagram. The comparison makes sense at first glance. Open the app and you’ll find beautifully shot images, short-form video, creators, comments, followers and an endless stream of lifestyle content.

But thinking about Xiaohongshu only as a social platform can lead brands in the wrong strategic direction.

Xiaohongshu, also known as RED or RedNote, has increasingly become an important search and discovery platform in China. Consumers don’t just open it to see what the people they follow are doing. And it’s again important to understand why that is happening: Whereas Google dominates search in most countries, Google search is not available in China. The Chinese equivalent, Baidu search, plays a very limited role in the Chinese digital ecosystem (for many reasons, one being that it doesn’t offer a good user experience). As a result, social media channels and Xiaohongshu in particular, have swooped in and taken over “search”.

Much like on Google, search on Xiaohongshu is a “high intent” activity and users start with specific questions, often mid- or bottom-funnel in their purchase decision making journey. They may ask questions such as: Which serum works for sensitive skin? Is a particular handbag worth the money? Where should they stay in Kyoto? What should they pack for Iceland in October? Which fragrance lasts longest? How does a new sneaker fit? What should they order at a restaurant they’ve never visited before?

For millions of Chinese consumers, especially younger urban consumers, Xiaohongshu has become a place to research those questions before making a purchase.

The scale of that behaviour is significant. By the fourth quarter of 2024, Xiaohongshu was processing roughly 600 million searches per day, twice the level reported in mid-2023 (Source).

Around 70% of monthly active Xiaohongshu users were already using search, whilst approximately one-third of users were reported to begin their session by searching rather than browsing. Research published by Xiaohongshu employees has similarly put average search penetration above 70%. Reuters reported in June 2026 that the platform had surpassed 400 million monthly active users in 2025.

For brands, this creates an opportunity that looks different from conventional social media marketing and that is also the reason why optimising for in-app search is an integral part of our Xiaohongshu Marketing Services. Creator campaigns and the recommendation feed can generate awareness, but their impact doesn't necessarily disappear when a campaign ends. The same content can become part of a searchable library that consumers encounter days, weeks, or months later when they begin actively researching a category or product.

On most social platforms, marketers compete primarily for attention. On Xiaohongshu, they can compete for both attention and intent.

Xiaohongshu Is Becoming a Search Engine for Everyday Decisions

Traditional search engines are good at answering factual questions. Xiaohongshu is particularly useful when the answer depends on experience. Search Google for the dimensions of a handbag and the manufacturer's website will probably give you the answer. Search Xiaohongshu for the same bag and users may show what fits inside, how it looks on someone who is 160 cm tall, whether the leather scratches easily, which colours work with a neutral wardrobe and whether they still think it was worth buying six months later. That difference explains much of Xiaohongshu's value.

The platform began as a place for Chinese consumers to exchange overseas shopping advice. That culture of sharing real-world experience remained as Xiaohongshu expanded into beauty, fashion, travel, luxury, food, fitness, interiors, parenting and hundreds of other lifestyle categories. Search now sits on top of an enormous database of lived experience.

Users often search in language that sounds more like a conversation with a knowledgeable friend than a traditional Google query. A single search can combine a product, problem, location, use case, audience and opinion: "foundation for oily skin in summer", "quiet luxury work bags", "Paris restaurants worth booking", "Tokyo hotel near shopping", "best moisturiser after retinol" or "[brand name] fragrance review". Often, the goal is not simply to find a website. It is to reduce uncertainty.

That becomes especially important for expensive, subjective or unfamiliar purchases. Someone considering a RMB 20,000 handbag wants evidence. A traveller choosing a hotel for a once-a-year trip wants to see the room from an actual guest's perspective. A shopper considering a new skincare active wants reassurance that people with a similar skin type have used it successfully. In each case, search becomes the bridge between awareness and action.

Independent research shows how strongly this behaviour is concentrated around commercially important categories. In its 2025 survey of Chinese Xiaohongshu users, beauty and skincare was the most commonly searched information category at 51%, followed by skills and learning at 44% and travel guides at 41%. More than 90% of all respondents in the sample also reported some increase in purchase intention after viewing product-seeding content, although many continued comparing alternatives before buying (Source).

That last point is important because Xiaohongshu search is rarely a straight line from one query to one purchase. Consumers compare their options.

For brands, the goal should go beyond ranking number one for a single term. The bigger opportunity is to build enough relevant visibility for the brand to appear repeatedly throughout the consumer’s research journey.

How Search on Xiaohongshu Actually Works

At a basic level, Xiaohongshu search feels familiar. A user enters a query, gets a set of results and moves between different pieces of content. Behind that simple interface, though, search is closely connected to the platform's recommendation system, creator ecosystem and social signals.

The primary searchable unit is the note, or 笔记. A note can contain photos, video, text, hashtags and comments, giving Xiaohongshu more information to work with than a traditional text-only search engine. The platform can consider the words used in titles and body copy, what’s shown visually, hashtags and topic classifications, user interaction with the note and how closely the content appears to satisfy a particular search intent.

Xiaohongshu is also becoming more sophisticated at understanding what users mean rather than simply matching identical words. Research published by Xiaohongshu engineers in 2026 describes production search systems that use query rewriting, named-entity recognition, term weighting and generated intent descriptions to interpret searches more effectively.

For marketers, the practical lesson is simple: Xiaohongshu SEO should not be reduced to repeating the same keywords throughout the caption.

A note targeting "best moisturiser for dry sensitive skin" for example, needs to genuinely address both dry and sensitive skin. What is the texture like? Does it sit well under makeup? Is fragrance present? How does it perform in winter? Who is it best suited to? How does it compare with obvious alternatives? Relevance gets the content into the competition, whilst usefulness helps it stay there.

Engagement adds another layer of information. Likes matter, but saves, comments, shares, click behaviour and the depth of interaction can also indicate whether a piece of content answered a user's need. A save is particularly meaningful because it suggests someone found the information useful enough to return to later. This helps explain why highly polished brand advertising does not automatically dominate Xiaohongshu search results. A smaller creator can still provide the more useful answer.

Search visibility comes from a combination of relevance, content quality, user response and the broader authority or credibility surrounding the content and account. Freshness can matter for fast-moving queries, whilst older content may continue surfacing where it remains useful. A strong Xiaohongshu note can therefore keep gaining discovery through search long after its initial burst of reach.

The Xiaohongshu Flywheel: Feeds Create Demand, Search Captures It

One of the biggest mistakes brands make is treating Xiaohongshu feed marketing and search as separate strategies. They work better as two parts of the same system. This is often referred to as the KFS Marketing Model.

Imagine a consumer sees a creator discussing a new fragrance whilst browsing the recommendation feed. They don’t buy it immediately. Later that evening, they search for the fragrance by name and read several reviews. The following weekend, they dig deeper with searches around longevity, summer wear, and comparisons with competing products. Eventually, they may visit Tmall, a Xiaohongshu store, a brand Mini Program, or a physical store.

The feed created curiosity, whilst search turned that curiosity into deeper consideration.

Search behaviour can reinforce what happens in the recommendation feed. If thousands of consumers start searching for the same product, the increase in interest becomes a signal in its own right. More creators notice the trend, more content appears, and the searchable content around the product expands.

This is why we generally recommend thinking about Xiaohongshu as a flywheel rather than a series of disconnected campaigns.

Creator content starts conversation. Paid amplification increases discovery. That discovery generates searches, whilst search content provides the information and proof consumers are looking for. The resulting saves, comments, shares and purchasing behaviour can give the platform more signals to surface useful content again.

The most sophisticated brands aren’t simply buying impressions with this system. They’re working to build visibility across the search results that matter to their category.

Xiaohongshu Keyword Research Is Not Google Keyword Research Translated into Chinese

Starting with a list of Google keywords, translating them into Chinese, and calling the job done misses much of the opportunity on Xiaohongshu.

The language people use on the platform is shaped by Chinese internet culture, category terminology, creator language, product nicknames and platform-specific trends. A product may have an unofficial Chinese nickname that attracts more search interest than its formal translated name. Consumers may describe a benefit in ways the brand would never use internally, whilst a new fashion aesthetic can quickly become an important way of discovering an entire category. That makes Xiaohongshu itself the best place to start the research.

Search autocomplete is one of the simplest tools available. Enter a category, product, destination, benefit or problem and look at the suggestions Xiaohongshu returns. These can reveal how users turn broad topics into more specific searches and questions.

Then study the search results themselves. Look at the language used in high-ranking titles, recurring questions in the comments, and what users praise, criticise, or ask creators to clarify. Competitor searches can also reveal whether their visibility is coming mainly from official accounts, major KOLs, smaller KOCs (KOLs vs KOCs) or organic consumer posts.

Advertisers can go further with the keyword and search-term data available through Xiaohongshu's Juguang advertising ecosystem. Platform training materials encourage advertisers to use keyword-planning tools, system-recommended terms and query data rather than relying on assumptions. They also recommend testing different types of search terms instead of concentrating only on a handful of obvious brand keywords. The result should be a search map rather than a simple keyword list.

That map can include branded searches such as the company name, individual products, Chinese product nicknames and campaign names. Category searches might include terms like "luxury tote bag", "sensitive skin serum" or "family hotel Osaka". Problem and benefit searches can go broader with phrases such as "foundation that doesn't oxidise", "comfortable shoes for walking all day", "hotel near Tokyo shopping", "fragrance that smells clean".

Comparison searches, occasions, audiences, trends and questions add another layer. Together, these searches show the different ways consumers may discover a brand and what information they’re looking for at each stage of the research journey.

Organic Xiaohongshu Search: Build a Searchable Content Ecosystem

Start with a simple question: if someone searches your brand on Xiaohongshu today, what do they actually see?

For established brands, there may already be hundreds or thousands of notes. That sounds promising until you look more closely. Search results might be dominated by discontinued products, outdated campaigns, incorrect information, negative experiences or content created for customer segments the brand no longer prioritises. A brand can have strong awareness and still have a poor search environment.

Newer brands face the opposite problem. Someone hears the brand name, searches Xiaohongshu and finds almost nothing. On a platform where consumers often look for social proof and real-world experiences, an empty search result can become a negative signal. Building organic search therefore requires content coverage to support the research journey.

Official brand content has an important role in providing product information, brand stories, launch details and authoritative explanations. But it rarely works alone because consumers also come to Xiaohongshu for perspectives beyond the brand itself. That's where KOLs, KOCs and organic user-generated content become valuable.

A strong search programme creates multiple entry points into the same topic. One creator might publish a detailed review, whilst another demonstrates the product in a specific scenario. A third compares it with alternatives. Smaller KOCs can address practical usage questions, whilst the official brand account provides technical details and deeper product information.

Over time, the search can begin to feel more like a living research environment rather than an advertising takeover. The goal isn’t to make every result repeat the same campaign tagline. It’s to build a collection of content that answers enough of the questions consumers are asking to help move them towards the brand.

How Paid Search Advertising Works on Xiaohongshu

Organic visibility can become extremely valuable over time, but brands do not have to wait for it to develop on its own. Xiaohongshu's Juguang advertising platform includes search advertising alongside feed ads and other commercial formats. The platform supports objectives such as product seeding, lead generation, app promotion and direct-response pathways.

Search advertising allows brands to increase the visibility of promoted notes when users search for relevant terms.

The concept is similar to paid search on Google, but the user experience is quite different. Instead of clicking a short text ad that leads to a standard landing page, users are often entering a Xiaohongshu note.

That means the ad still needs to work as useful content.

A translated global campaign asset may technically be eligible for promotion, but it can still perform poorly if it does not answer the searcher's question. Search creative should instead be built around the query itself.

Someone searching "oily skin foundation" should land on content about oily skin. A user searching "Paris hotel with Eiffel Tower view" should see the room, the view, the location and practical booking considerations. Someone researching a luxury bag should encounter useful information about styling, craftsmanship, size or ownership experience rather than an abstract brand film. The keyword and the note need to make sense together.

Xiaohongshu advertising training materials emphasise this connection. They recommend aligning note titles, imagery and content with the keywords being purchased. The same guidance also suggests using a broader mix of brand terms, category terms, scenarios and benefit-related terms rather than concentrating all spend on a small number of obvious keywords.

Paid search works best when it supports an existing library of strong content. Advertising can place that content in front of more searchers, but it cannot rescue a note that is irrelevant or unconvincing.

How Much Budget Do You Need for Xiaohongshu Search?

There is no universal budget figure because search demand and competition vary widely by industry. A boutique hotel bidding on a handful of destination terms operates in a very different media environment from an international beauty brand competing for high-volume skincare searches.

It is also important to separate account costs from media spend. Xiaohongshu's current enterprise Professional Account rules state a RMB 600 certification fee, with annual renewal also priced at RMB 600. Eligibility and documentation requirements vary by jurisdiction and industry, including for overseas businesses. That fee should not be confused with the working budget needed to run a meaningful search campaign.

A few hundred RMB may be enough to test the mechanics, but it is rarely enough to support major conclusions. Third-party agency benchmarks published in 2026 place many Xiaohongshu search clicks around RMB 1 to 3, whilst highly competitive beauty terms can reach roughly RMB 4 to 6 per click. Actual CPCs still move by keyword, bidding strategy, season, audience and creative quality.

For a tightly defined test, RMB 5,000 to 10,000 in search media can provide useful initial signals if the number of keyword groups and creatives stays limited. A larger product launch or national campaign can quickly move into tens of thousands of RMB in search spend alone, before KOL/KOC fees, production costs, account management and feed amplification are added.

The better question is not simply "What is the minimum budget?" It is how much spend is needed to generate enough data in the search territory the brand wants to compete in.

Spreading RMB 5,000 across hundreds of keywords, multiple audience groups and too many creative variations usually teaches very little. Concentrating the same budget around a smaller set of high-priority searches gives the test a better chance of producing useful patterns. Once certain notes and keywords consistently deliver strong click-through rates, saves, interactions or downstream conversions, budgets can be expanded around those combinations.

Search Strategy for Established Brands and Product Launches

Well-known international brands arrive on Xiaohongshu with an advantage: people may already be searching for them. The challenge is that the brand does not necessarily control what those searchers find. For a new product launch, search should be part of the plan before launch day rather than something added once the campaign is already running.

Start with the branded search environment. Anyone searching for the brand, campaign, or product name should find enough high-quality content to understand what has launched and why it matters. From there, the strategy can expand into the wider questions consumers are likely to research.

Take a beauty brand launching a new serum. Search coverage should go beyond the product's official name to include its core ingredient, skin concerns, application routine, texture, target audience, comparisons, and likely objections. Creator briefs can distribute those angles deliberately, so ten creators don’t end up publishing ten versions of the same press release.

Feed investment and major KOL partnerships can generate the first wave of awareness. As searches increase, paid search can help put the strongest content in front of consumers researching strategically important queries. This turns growing search interest into something the brand can continue building on.

Xiaohongshu's own advertising site illustrates the idea with an Intel case study, reporting a 2,135% increase in product search index during a broader campaign built around a culturally relevant "nomadic work" concept. The 2,135% figure is specific to Intel’s campaign, but the case shows that branded search growth can be treated as a campaign objective rather than an accidental by-product.

Luxury fashion offers another example. Reports on Gucci's Spring/Summer 2025 Milan Fashion Week activity describe a strategy combining livestreaming, paid discovery and post-show content. Brand-related searches reportedly increased fivefold after the campaign.

For established brands, that opportunity is to create demand through the wider campaign whilst making sure the search environment is ready when consumers come looking.

Search Strategy for Brands Entering China with Zero Awareness

The strategy changes when very few people are searching for the brand by name. A company entering China for the first time cannot build its Xiaohongshu plan around branded keywords alone because branded demand is still limited. Instead, it needs to connect with demand that already exists in the category.

Take an unknown European skincare brand focused on barrier repair. Its first meaningful search territory may not be the Chinese transliteration of its brand name. More useful opportunities may sit around damaged skin barriers, sensitive skin, post-acid skincare, winter dryness or moisturisers for redness.

Content can enter those conversations first. Creators explain the problem and show where the product fits. KOCs can provide more detailed reviews, whilst the official account supports the conversation with educational content. Paid search can then amplify the strongest notes against relevant non-brand terms.

As consumers encounter the same unfamiliar brand across multiple pieces of useful content, curiosity can start to build. Some users may then search for the brand directly. That shift is important because it suggests the brand is beginning to move from borrowing category demand toward creating demand of its own.

For brands that are new to China, it makes sense to watch both category visibility and branded search growth. The first shows whether the brand is being discovered. The second indicates whether people are interested enough to investigate further. Together, they offer a more useful view of early market traction than follower growth alone.

Xiaohongshu Search Tactics for Luxury Brands

Luxury search behaviour is rarely just about finding a product or checking a price. Consumers may be researching craftsmanship, cultural relevance, styling, status, collectability, sizing, scarcity or the wider experience surrounding a purchase. That gives luxury brands a much broader search territory than simply ranking for their own product names.

A handbag campaign, for example, can appear across styling searches, work-bag searches, colour comparisons, leather care, sizing, what fits inside, seasonal looks and product history. Watch brands can build content around movements, collecting, wrist sizes, model comparisons and design heritage. Jewellery brands can connect product discovery with gifting occasions, gemstones, styling and milestone purchases.

The challenge is maintaining brand control without making every result feel like an advertisement. On Xiaohongshu, overly controlled content can undermine the credibility consumers are looking for. A better balance is controlled diversity: hero KOLs can build aspiration, whilst smaller creators and KOCs provide the practical details and real-world perspectives that help consumers evaluate an expensive purchase.

Search also gives luxury brands a way to connect with emerging cultural territories. Xiaohongshu data has been used by fashion and luxury companies to identify changing interests around aesthetics, hobbies and lifestyles, from urban outdoor culture to retro dressing and sports-related fashion.

The opportunity goes beyond ranking for searches like "Brand X bag" Strong luxury search strategies also build visibility around the places where consumer tastes and preferences are taking shape.

Xiaohongshu Search Tactics for Beauty and Skincare Brands

Beauty is one of the clearest examples of how Xiaohongshu search works because consumers rarely stop at broad category terms. They add skin type, ingredients, specific concerns, climate, finish, occasion, budget and desired results, creating thousands of long-tail search opportunities.

The scale is significant. NewRank and DLG's 2025 analysis of premium beauty brands recorded more than 162 million beauty-category searches during its measurement period. Of the popular beauty keywords analysed, 41.1% related to product names, nicknames or models, whilst another 8.5% focused directly on user experiences such as swatches or usage methods.

That is why beauty brands need more than a posting calendar. They need a search architecture that connects each product with the different questions consumers are likely to ask.

A foundation, for example, should be discoverable through searches related to finish, skin type, shade, wear time and climate. A serum can connect to ingredients, skin concerns, routines and compatibility with other products. Lipstick content can show how shades look across different skin tones and lighting conditions.

Creator selection should follow those questions. A dermatologist-style educator may help explain ingredients, whilst a makeup specialist can demonstrate application. A KOC with oily skin may be better positioned to answer a specific performance question based on personal experience.

Paid search can then strengthen visibility around high-value category and problem-based searches whilst helping protect branded product terms during launch periods. The strongest beauty search strategies are not necessarily the ones producing the most content. They are the ones systematically reducing the number of unanswered questions between interest and purchase.

Xiaohongshu Search Tactics for Fashion Brands

Fashion discovery on Xiaohongshu sits somewhere between inspiration and practical problem solving. Users search for aesthetics like minimalist dressing, quiet luxury, balletcore or outdoor style, but they also look for very specific needs such as office outfits, petite styling, holiday wardrobes, comfortable walking shoes or what to wear at a particular temperature.

That means fashion brands should think in combinations rather than isolated products. A dress becomes more searchable when it is connected to an occasion. A jacket becomes more useful when it appears across several outfits. A pair of shoes becomes more convincing when someone talks about comfort after wearing them for hours.

It is also worth watching the language consumers use to describe the brand. Users may associate a product with an aesthetic, nickname or phrase that the marketing team never anticipated. If that language starts appearing organically, it can become a useful search territory to support rather than suppress.

Major fashion moments can create another layer of opportunity. Runway shows, celebrity appearances, collaborations and pop-ups can generate short bursts of attention. Search advertising and creator content can help extend those moments by turning event-driven interest into longer-term discovery.

After a campaign, brands should look beyond views alone. Search activity around the brand, collection, hero products and associated aesthetics can show how consumer interest developed after the initial fashion moment.

Xiaohongshu Search Tactics for Travel and Hospitality Brands

For travel marketers, Xiaohongshu can feel less like Instagram and more like Google, TripAdvisor, Pinterest and a guidebook. Chinese travellers use the platform to decide where to go, where to stay, what to eat, how long to spend somewhere and what to do once they arrive.

The scale of the behaviour is significant. Xiaohongshu's own 2026 outbound travel data reported 130 million monthly active outbound-travel users from January to December 2025, with more than 90% actively conducting travel-related searches. That makes search particularly valuable for destinations, hotels, tourism boards, shopping centres, restaurants and attractions outside mainland China.

Keyword planning should follow the way people actually plan trips. A hotel in Bangkok, for example, shouldn’t focus only on its Chinese brand name. Searches might include "Bangkok luxury hotel", "Bangkok hotel near shopping", "family hotel Bangkok", "Bangkok hotel breakfast", specific neighbourhoods, or nearby attractions. Tourism organisations can go wider with itineraries, weather by month, visa questions, food, shopping, road trips, photography locations, festivals and seasonal experiences.

Travel content can also be surprisingly practical. Show the room. Explain the transport options. Photograph the breakfast. Say how long the airport transfer took and whether the location is actually walkable. These details may seem ordinary, but they’re exactly the kind of information travellers look for when researching a trip.

Evergreen search gives that content a longer life. A useful "three days in Melbourne" itinerary, for example, can continue influencing travellers long after the original creator campaign has ended. Over time, that searchable content library can become part of a destination's wider digital infrastructure.

Xiaohongshu Search Tactics for Lifestyle Brands

"Lifestyle" covers a wide range of categories, from homeware and food to fitness, consumer technology, wellness and everyday products. Search becomes especially useful here because consumers often begin with a practical problem, use case, or scenario rather than a brand name.

A cookware brand, for example, can connect with searches around weeknight meals, small kitchens, or basic cooking techniques. A luggage brand might appear around packing, business travel or short trips. Headphones can fit naturally into searches about commuting, running, long flights or staying focused at work.

The challenge is resisting the urge to force the product into every piece of content. Search-first content begins with the user’s question and provides something useful before introducing the product as part of the answer.

AnyMind’s campaign for Knorr offers a useful example. Built around Chinese New Year cooking among Malaysia's Chinese community, the campaign focused on reunion-dinner recipes and practical cooking inspiration. Nine creators generated more than 331,900 impressions and 4,000 engagements. Paid boosting added more than 10,900 clicks, with a reported 10.9% click-through rate.

The broader lesson is simple: utility gives people a reason to engage with the content. When the product fits naturally into that useful answer, it has a better chance of feeling relevant rather than forced.

Measuring Xiaohongshu Search Performance

Measuring search performance means looking beyond follower growth, impressions and likes. At the highest level, watch branded search demand and changes in the search index. These can help show whether broader campaigns are generating enough interest for consumers to actively look for the brand.

Next, look at your share of search visibility. For the priority keywords, how much of the results come from official brand content, paid creator partnerships, organic consumer posts and competitors? The quality of that visibility matters too. Appearing prominently through a negative review creates a very different search environment from appearing through a detailed, positive comparison.

At the note level, track search impressions, clicks, CTR, saves, comments, and the quality of engagement. These signals can help identify which pieces of content are connecting with people arriving through search.

Paid search needs a wider view as well. CPC alone does not tell you whether a campaign is working. A low-cost click has limited value if the user does nothing afterward, whilst a more expensive click may still be worthwhile if the note leads to saves, deeper interaction, or downstream action.

Where possible, connect Xiaohongshu activity with broader business outcomes. That might include Tmall activity, store visits, Mini Program behaviour, direct sales, branded Google searches outside China, or even the questions retail staff hear from customers.

Attribution will never be perfect because Xiaohongshu can influence purchases that happen elsewhere. Reuters has also reported on the platform's growing influence on consumer decisions beyond its own commerce ecosystem. This is particularly relevant for premium and lifestyle categories, where research on Xiaohongshu may be followed by a purchase through another channel.

That doesn’t make search impossible to measure. It simply means brands should consider Xiaohongshu’s influence alongside last-click conversion data.

The Biggest Mistake: Treating Xiaohongshu Search as a Technical SEO Exercise

It is easy to turn Xiaohongshu search into a mechanical checklist. Put the keyword in the headline, include it in the body copy, add a few relevant hashtags, and repeat the process across multiple posts. But that approach misses the more important part of how search works on the platform.

People use Xiaohongshu search because they want useful information grounded in real experiences. The platform is trying to connect those users with content that satisfies what they are looking for. Keyword optimisation can help establish what a note is about, but it cannot make unhelpful content useful.

That is why consumer insight should come before technical optimisation. What makes someone hesitate before buying? Which alternatives are they comparing? What language do they naturally use when describing the product or problem? What makes a post useful enough to save or share? And what information is still missing from the search results already available?

Answering those questions gives the content a stronger foundation. From there, titles, body copy, hashtags, and other search signals can be used to make the topic clearer and improve its chances of being discovered.

Build Search into Your Xiaohongshu Strategy from Day One

Search changes the economics of Xiaohongshu marketing because campaign content does not have to disappear once the initial burst of attention is over.

Without search built into the strategy, campaigns become heavily dependent on the next round of creator activity or paid distribution. With a search-first approach, useful content has a better chance of remaining discoverable after the campaign itself has ended.

A product review created around launch can still appear when consumers research the product later. A travel itinerary may continue helping people planning the same destination months afterward. A skincare tutorial can remain relevant as long as users keep searching for the question it answers. Over time, each campaign can add to the brand’s wider searchable presence on the platform.

At Red Ant Asia, we do not treat Xiaohongshu as simply another social content channel. Account management, KOL and KOC seeding, search optimisation and paid media can support one another when they are planned as part of the same strategy.

For an established brand, search can help capture existing demand and carry product-launch interest into deeper consideration. For brands entering China for the first time, it offers a way to participate in category conversations before strong branded search demand has developed.

In both cases, campaign reach is only part of the picture. Brands should also pay attention to what consumers search for afterward and what they find when they do. FAQ: Search Strategy for Xiaohongshu

Is Xiaohongshu really used as a search engine in China?

Yes. Search has become a major part of how people use Xiaohongshu. By late 2024, the platform was processing roughly 600 million searches per day, whilst research from Xiaohongshu employees has put average search penetration above 70%. Users search across categories such as beauty, fashion, travel, food, and lifestyle.

How is Xiaohongshu search different from Google?

Google searches across the open web. Xiaohongshu search works within its own ecosystem of notes, photos, videos, creators and comments. That makes firsthand experience, visual evidence, comparisons, and practical advice particularly important.

How does Xiaohongshu SEO work?

Relevance comes first. Titles, body copy, hashtags, and topic signals help Xiaohongshu understand what a note covers. The platform also uses more sophisticated search technology, including semantic understanding and intent interpretation, so simply repeating a keyword is not enough.

Where should brands use keywords in Xiaohongshu posts?

Use the main topic naturally in the title and body copy, with relevant hashtags and supporting visual context where appropriate. The goal is clarity, not repetition. A note still needs to answer the question behind the search.

How can brands research Xiaohongshu keywords?

Start with Xiaohongshu itself. Search autocomplete can reveal how users expand broad topics into more specific questions. Study high-ranking notes, recurring language in comments, competitor content, and the terms consumers use naturally. Advertisers can also use keyword and search-term data available through Juguang.

Can brands buy search ads on Xiaohongshu?

Yes. Xiaohongshu's Juguang advertising platform includes search advertising alongside feed ads and other commercial formats. Brands can promote relevant search terms to increase the visibility of promoted notes when users are researching those topics.

How much should a brand spend testing Xiaohongshu search advertising?

It depends on the category, competition, timing, and scope of the test. For a tightly defined campaign, RMB 5,000 to 10,000 in search media can provide useful initial search signals when the number of keywords and creatives is kept manageable. This is a planning benchmark, not an official platform minimum.

Should a new brand bid on its own name?

Branded terms may have limited value when very few people are searching for the brand yet. New entrants can also focus on existing category demand, consumer problems, benefits, and use cases. As branded search grows, those terms can become more important.

Should established brands focus mainly on branded keywords?

Not necessarily. Branded terms matter, particularly around launches, but established brands can also build visibility across category, benefit, comparison, and problem-based searches. This gives consumers more ways to encounter the brand whilst researching.

Is KOL or KOC content important for Xiaohongshu search?

Yes. Official accounts can provide authoritative product information, whilst KOLs and KOCs add different perspectives, demonstrations, reviews, and real-world experiences. Together, they can create broader coverage around the questions consumers are researching.

How long can a Xiaohongshu post continue generating search traffic?

There is no fixed lifespan. Some content loses relevance quickly, especially around fast-moving trends. Evergreen notes can remain discoverable much longer when they continue answering questions people search for.
